Another belated vote for the GT4.

Before anyone else spots it, I see an error in the section about the auction – it wasn’t a Maserati Sebring, it was a 1963 3500GTI Vignale Spyder – I’m not sure how that got past my edit, except that there was also a Sebring (next to the Triumph 2500) on offer – could you correct it please, Claus? Thank you!

@jens – sorry you had such a bad time at Clarkson’s Farm, but I’m afraid it attracts a ridiculous number of visitors, which is why I have never been…
There’s a reason you see so many Morgans in the Cotswolds – they are built in Malvern, just a few km from the North-West edge of the Cotswolds.

I think the answer to your question, Claus, is a Porsche 944 S2, with 3-litre engine giving you plenty of performance, yet is still practical for long trips. And good ones are still available for reasonable money.

Rothenburg is lovely, have visited it a few times. As for the SLK, I have to admit I prefer the later versions, they look sportier to my eyes, though the original is pretty enough.

@Lars – I know what you mean, but I think it’s true for almost every “prestigious” marque, that there are some who own them only for the “prestige” they think such ownership gives them – it’s all about status, visibility for them; Porsche, Mercedes, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce etc etc all attract some owners like this; it’s the way of things, I suppose.

Allow me to throw the VW Eos into the mix – looks pretty good with roof up, and very cool with roof down. The roof is in five parts, including a separately operable sunroof, so quite lot to go wrong, admittedly.

Sounds like a fine trip you have planned, Claus – and if you have time to go to the Cite de l’Automobile in Mulhouse, you will not regret it!
It’s true that the no speed limit autobahns in Germany are often too busy to get far above 160km/h, although in a classic this hardly matters. I did once reach 251km/h in a Porsche 996, on a lovely empty…[Læs mere]

I’m a big fan of late 60’s and early 70’s Maserati’s, which for me have always offered better value than the equivalent Ferrari’s even at their peak. Have to agree that the Alfa 156 will be a future classic, even if my own experience with one was disastrous. I would also suggest the first generation Audi TT, and BMW E46 – they look good, they drive well, and in the case of the TT, was a trendsetter in design. Here in the UK, Historic Vehicles ie over 40 years old, are exempt from charges in all clean-air zones, no exceptions. For once, we have a sensible regulation. It means my 52-year old 911 is exempt, but my 39 years and 11 months old is not, at least for another month.
