If you don’t mind the running costs, an XK8 is one of the classic car bargains, certainly in the UK. A friend just sold his XK8 convertible – a good, solid car in all respects – for just £8,000, and this after being on the market for many months.

My father ran a GS Pallas in metallic brown with black vinyl roof back in the late 1970s – I got to drive it a few times, really liked it – it was super comfortable, and of course we all loved it’s party trick with the suspension! Hardly see them at all here, now.

It is unquestionably a buyers’ market and if your intention is to keep whatever you buy for some years and use it – as it should be :-) – then your difficulty is, as you say, not whether to buy, but what to buy. Interesting that classic car prices have fallen so much in Denmark – it’s the same here in the UK, and not just British cars. It took me almost a year to sell my 280CE, for quite a bit less than I originally requested, which I thought was a reasonable mid-point between the very best and very average. @Niels – the drawback is you have to be a Fellow of the GRRC (or know someone who is) to buy a ticket for the Members’ Meeting. Last year that cost £89, plus £94 for the ticket. Here’s another Mercedes “Art Car”, this time a 1952 220S Cabriolet A, painted by Japanese artist Hiro Yamagata – this is one of about 20 similar cars he’s painted as part of a series called “Earthly Delights” and was at the London Concours last year. I’m not sure I like it, I like the BMW “Art Cars” more, particularly the Lichtenstein one.

@ce – I think the FIAT is a very under-rated small coupé, along with the Lancia Fulvia – both seem to get much less attention than the Alfa 105/115 series, but it means that they are much less expensive than the Alfa (in the UK, at least) and to my mind, very comparable. And yes, I’m sure your 124 looked great in orange!

The Mercedes-Benz Museum is one of the best car museums I have been to and is a must-visit if you are in Stuttgart. Ideally, you can do the MB Museum in the morning and the Porsche Museum in the afternoon (or vice-versa) – a perfect way to spend a day!

@ce – re the VW use of wind names, yes, I was aware – my point was more that in the case of the Golf (and Passat, Bora, since you mention them) the cars do not reflect the names in any way, whereas with Maserati, they do. At least, that’s how I see it.
